I have decided that I want to schedule some cool places to explore. I’ve been to most of the parks and museums in the Triangle and I’m looking for options a little farther away. What are your suggestions of little gems of places to see and still make it back home on the same day?
The Triangle is uniquely located between the beach and mountains so there are many fantastic day trip options. Here are a few of my favorites:
Hanging Rock State Park (Westfield)

Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 2 hours
Highlights: This state park is perfect for outdoor adventurers, offering rugged hiking trails, stunning views from cliffs and peaks, waterfalls, and a lake for swimming and canoeing. The park’s natural beauty makes it a popular spot for hiking and photography.
Kerr Lake (Manson)

Highlights: Kerr Lake is a large reservoir offering plenty of water-based activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. The surrounding area also has picnic spots, hiking trails, and campgrounds, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the water.

Seagrove Pottery District (Seagrove)

Highlights: Seagrove is known as the pottery capital of North Carolina, home to over 100 pottery studios and galleries. Visitors can tour working studios, meet potters, and purchase unique, handcrafted pieces.
Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park (Wilson)
