Day Trips
Dear Amy,
I have decided that I want to schedule some cool places to explore. I’ve been to most of the parks and museums in the Triangle and I’m looking for options a little farther away. What are your suggestions of little gems of places to see and still make it back home on the same day?

The Triangle is uniquely located between the beach and mountains so there are many fantastic day trip options. Here are a few of my favorites:
Hanging Rock State Park (Westfield)
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 2 hours
Highlights: This state park is perfect for outdoor adventurers, offering rugged hiking trails, stunning views from cliffs and peaks, waterfalls, and a lake for swimming and canoeing. The park’s natural beauty makes it a popular spot for hiking and photography.
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 1 hours
Highlights: Kerr Lake is a large reservoir offering plenty of water-based activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. The surrounding area also has picnic spots, hiking trails, and campgrounds, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the water.
NC Christmas Tree Farms (Boone Area)
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 3 hours
Highlights: The Boone area is famous for its Christmas tree farms, where you can choose and cut your own tree. A perfect day trip during the holiday season for festive fun in the mountains.
NC Transportation Museum (Spencer)
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 2 hours
Highlights: The N.C. Transportation Museum is a historic site, once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility in the southeast, and a museum featuring all types of transportation history – railroading, automotive, aviation, and more.
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 1.5 hours
Highlights: The North Carolina Zoo is one of the largest natural habitat zoos in the world, featuring over 500 acres of exhibits representing Africa, North America, and other regions. It’s perfect for a family-friendly day trip with a variety of animals, walking trails, and educational programs.
Seagrove Pottery District (Seagrove)
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 1.5 hours
Highlights: Seagrove is known as the pottery capital of North Carolina, home to over 100 pottery studios and galleries. Visitors can tour working studios, meet potters, and purchase unique, handcrafted pieces.
Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park (Wilson)
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 1 hours
Highlights: This unique park showcases the whimsical, large-scale wind-powered sculptures known as Whirligigs, created by folk artist Vollis Simpson. It’s a fun, artistic day trip for all ages.
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 2 hours
Highlights: Yadkin Valley is North Carolina’s premier wine region, with numerous wineries offering tastings, tours, and beautiful vineyard views. Perfect for wine lovers.
Local towns that are worth a visit as a daytrip:
Carolina Beach and Kure Beach
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 2.5 hours
Highlights: These beaches near Wilmington offer classic seaside fun, with boardwalks, water sports, and fresh seafood. Carolina Beach State Park is also nearby for hiking and nature walks.
Historic Hillsborough
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 30 minutes
Highlights: Hillsborough is a small, historic town with a rich colonial and Revolutionary War history. Visitors can explore historic sites like the Ayr Mount estate, stroll along the Eno River, and enjoy local shops and restaurants in the charming downtown area.
Pinehurst and Southern Pines
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 1.5 hours
Highlights: Known for its world-class golf courses, including Pinehurst Resort, this area also offers charming downtowns, local shops, and the beautiful Sandhills Horticultural Gardens. It’s a great destination for golf enthusiasts or those looking to explore a quaint Southern town.
Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 2 hours
Highlights: Wilmington offers a blend of history, culture, and coastal charm. Explore the historic downtown with its riverwalk, visit the Battleship North Carolina, and relax at nearby Wrightsville Beach. It’s an excellent option for a beach day with a mix of city exploration.
Winston-Salem
Distance from the Triangle: Approximately 1.5 hours
