Dear Amy,
We are moving from the West Coast to Cary, NC. I have heard that there are multiple school calendar options. Can you tell me more about the options available in the area?
While it can seem very confusing at first, the options available allow families to find the one that works best for them. Below is a list with a brief description of the available options.
- Traditional Calendar - This calendar follows the typical school year schedule, starting in late August and ending in early June, with breaks for holidays and a long summer break.
- Year-Round Calendar Schools operating on a year-round schedule divide the year into nine-week quarters, each separated by three-week intersession breaks. There are 4 different “tracks” that alternate between being in school and on break. This calendar aims to reduce learning loss, provide more consistent breaks, and fully utilize school buildings.
- Track 4 Year-Round (Single Track): Similar to the year-round calendar, but all students follow the same schedule without overlapping breaks.
- Modified Calendar: This option offers a different schedule that may start earlier or end later than the traditional calendar, with slightly different break periods.
These options provide flexibility to families in the Triangle area, you can see the options for your area by visiting the counties' websites.
Dear Amy,

Dear Amy,
I homeschool my two kids, we are considering a move to the Hillsborough, NC area. Do you know of any homeschooling resources in the area?
North Carolina is considered a “homeschool-friendly state.” If you were to combine all homeschooling students into one “school district,” it would be the 3rd largest district in the state. Here are some resources to get started in NC or continue your homeschooling education.Amy is experienced in helping homeschooling families find a home that has an appropriate learning spaceand is close to the activities and homeschool resources that are best for you.
Getting Started in NC
You need to register your intention to homeschool with the state. This is called a “Notice of Intent,” and you may see it abbreviated to NOI. You can learn the steps of how to do so from the NC Dept of Administration at: www.ncadmin.nc.gov/divisions/non-public-education/home-schools/file-notice-intent-operate-home-school
You will register using your home address and you must have a high school diploma at the time of registration. While the address of your homeschool can change, the name of your school cannot so consider your homeschool name wisely, as it will appear on your child’s high school transcript and college applications. More information about the application process, state laws, and documentation required can be found at: www.trianglehomeschoolresources.com/getting-started/filing-your-notice-of-intent-nc/
